Yeti Crab

Photo provided by the Census of Marine Life shows a Kiwa hirsuta, the Yeti crab, a new species found near Easter Island

Discovered in 2005 in the South Pacific Ocean, this creature was dubbed the "yeti lobster" or "yeti crab". It lives at a depth of 2,200 metres on hydrothermal vents and cold seeps along the Pacific-Antarctic.

This decapod, which is approximately 15 cm (5.9 in) long, is notable for the quantity of silky blond setae (resembling fur) covering its pereiopods (thoracic legs, including claws). It has strongly reduced eyes that lack pigment, and is thought to be blind.

Food: feeds on bacteria, although it is generally thought to be a carnivore

Habitat: hydrothermal vents and cold seeps along the Pacific-Antarctic
