The Shoebill also known as whale-head or Shoe-billed stork, is a very large stork-like bird. The species was only discovered by ornithologists in the 19th century.
The adult is mainly grey while the juveniles are browner. It lives in fresh water swamps of central tropical Africa, from Southern Sudan through parts of Eastern Congo, Rwanda, Uganda and western Tanzania.
Shoebills are largely piscivorous but are assured predators of wetland vertebrates. Preferred prey species are marbled lungfish, senegal birch, various tilapia and catfish species.
