Axolotl

The Axolotl or Mexican salamander is a neotenic mole salamander, closely related to the tiger salamander. The species originates from numerous lakes underlying Mexico City, such as Lake Xochimilco.

They are used extensively in scientific research due to their ability to regenerate most body parts. As of 2010, axolotls are nearly extinct due to urbanization of Mexico City and polluted waters.
